INGREDIENTS:
THE PASTRY:
3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 tsp salt
1 cup lard
½ cup cold water
INSTRUCTIONS:
Combine flour and salt. With pastry blender or two knives, cut in lard until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add water and work until the dough can be handled and is not sticky. Wrap in wax paper and refrigerate.
THE FILLING:
1 ½ lbs. beef round steak, uncooked & cut into ½-inch cubes
3 potatoes, peeled & cubed
½ cup grated carrots
½ cup finely chopped rutabaga
½ cup finely chopped onions
1 tsp salt
Dash of pepper
1 TB butter, cut up
INSTRUCTIONS:
In large bowl, combine first five ingredients. Add salt, pepper, and butter. Blend well. Preheat oven to 325°F. Grease two large cookie sheets. Divide pastry into 6 equal pieces. Roll out each to an 8 or 9-inch square or round.
On half of each pastry place 1/6 of filling. Fold over other half and seal edges with tines of a fork dipped in flour. Make 4 slashes in top of each and bake 1 hour or until lightly browned. Makes 6 servings.
