SOFT SOAP (Homemade)

Happy National Day of Giving Eve (for 2025). In honor, here’s Mom’s recipe for…

SOFT SOAP (Homemade)

By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published newsletter… Gloria Pitzer’s Secret Recipe Report (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; December 1980, p. 9).

INGREDIENTS/ITEM NEEDS:

1 bar (4.75-oz) Dial soap

1-qt (4 cups) hot tap water

4-oz cologne or after-shave lotion or a combination of assorted perfumes

4 cups [additional] warm tap water

INSTRUCTIONS:

Grate the soap on large holes of vegetable grater. Put half of soap in blender with half of hot water, blending until smooth (using on/off, speed on high, for 2 minutes). Pour into large pitcher or container or kettle. Then [in blender] add rest of soap gratings and the other 2 cups of hot water, put through blender [also] until smooth.

Add to first mixture and stir in cologne. Let stand overnight and then add the last 4 cups of warm water, beating vigorously until smooth and free of any lumps. Divide mixture equally between 4 (8-oz each) pump-style containers…

Mixture will settle in bulk, as it stands the first day. The second or third day, force mixture down with the back of a spoon to smooth it out. Mash out any signs of little bubbles. Additional cologne or [warm] water may be added if too thick.
