POTATO (or ERASER) STAMPS, HOMEMADE

By Gloria Pitzer [circa 1970s]

When Mom began “the family enterprise” in the early 1970s, she designed her own stamps, with which to decorate the covers and pages of her self-published books.

She used different colored ink pads and rubber erasers or small, firm potatoes that were cut with her own designs of mushrooms, flowers, kitchen gadgets and more – even words. Mom learned about this craft from her dear friend, Carol Duvall.

INGREDIENTS/ITEM NEEDS:

Small, firm potatoes (or block-like rubber erasers)

Ink pen or Sharpie

X-acto or paring knife

Various colored ink pads

INSTRUCTIONS:

Cut the potatoes in half. Draw your design on the flat side of the potatoes (or erasers). Remember, when creating letters and words, they need to be drawn backwards on the “stamp”.

Cut away the rest of the flat side, all around the design (or only cut out the design itself), to about 1/8-inch deep. Dab the exposed or extended design on an ink pad and then on your paper or fabric or whatever you are decorating.
