SWEETEN HOUSE BREAD PUDDING

SWEETEN HOUSE BREAD PUDDING

By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in… Gloria Pitzer’s Cookbook – Best Of The Recipe Detective (Balboa Press; Jan. 2018, p. 277). [A revised reprint of Gloria Pitzer’s Better Cookery Cookbook (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; May 1983, 3rd Edition).]

INGREDIENTS:

6 slices of white toast – crusts trimmed away

Butter or margarine, to taste

Cinnamon and Sugar Mix, to taste

½ cup packed brown sugar

½ cup raisins

4 eggs

2 tablespoons sugar

2 cups milk

Sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, to garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

Butter… toast. Sprinkle buttered sides… with Cinnamon and Sugar Mix… to taste. Make 3 sandwiches out of the 6 slices, placing cinnamon-sugared sides together. Cut each sandwich into 4 strips. Arrange them in a single layer in a buttered 9-inch square baking dish. Sprinkle brown sugar over this. Then sprinkle with raisins. Combine… eggs with… sugar and… milk in a small bowl, beating well. Pour over bread pieces. Place baking dish in larger pan with enough water in it to reach halfway up the sides of the dish [containing] the bread mixture. Bake at 375°F for 45 minutes or until “set”. Serve warm, topped with sweetened whipped cream; or “a la mode”, with vanilla ice cream. Serves 6.
