GRANNY SQUARE BOX PURSE – A Purse Full of Pockets!
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published folder… Granny Square How To (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; Fall 1986, p. 2).
LAST ROUND OF each square can be done in black yarn, with other rounds in other colors – the brighter, the better! OR you can use only one color for the entire purse. [NOTE: Refer to Granny Square How To post, for creating your squares.]
INGREDIENTS/NEEDS:
“F” Hook – 4-Ply Yarn scraps
“E” Hook for 3-Ply Yarn… Total of 18-oz.
[3 Buttons]
INSTRUCTIONS:
[Crochet] 27 squares of 3 rounds each.
[Crochet] 14 squares of 6 rounds each.
Strap has 7 squares – 3 rounds each. Side panels, “lid” and bottom… are comprised of 4-square panels of 3 rounds each.
Front and back panels are exactly alike, comprised of 4 squares – 6 rounds each. Flap of the “lid” has 2 squares – 6 rounds each.
Single crochet all seams together on outside of purse. Single crochet center seam together, before assembling side panels. When single crocheting 4 pocket pieces to other pieces, line up stitches, slipping one panel at a time onto hook before working each single crochet stitch. Makes for a more uniform, neater edge this way.
Sew 3 buttons on front of purse [as illustrated] to close flap. Finish all edges (around flap and pockets and strap edge) with a single stitch in every space around, for 1 row.
Make square “U” shaped piece of stiff cardboard – tape pieces at seams and then cover in contact paper, same color as that of main color in purse – to insert snugly inside, across bottom and up sides, to give purse support and body.
