Happy July! During July, a month-long, annual event, the “Great Northern Yarn Haul”, will be traversing across the northeast states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont; where crafters visit participating yarn stores to collect “stamps”, win prizes, and shop.
Similarly, a regional, annual “Yarn Crawl” event, called the “Heartland Yarn Adventure”, will be celebrated in the northern, Midwest states (Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio), starting July 24th. These are great opportunities and observances that also relate to July, being Independent Retailer Month. Support your local independent yarn retailers – Mom would!

HOOKED ON GRANNY SQUARES – OPEN-FRONT VEST
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published newsletter… Gloria Pitzer’s Secret Recipes Newsletter (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; Sep-Oct 1987, p. 11).
Using our special “How To Granny Stitch” folder, it takes only a few evenings of spare time to make up this open-front vest. DO NOT work any extra chain stitches between the shells of 3 DCs! My basic instructions in my folder tell you this.
K-Mart’s Riviera Brand [of] nubby textured yarn, in the 1-oz skeins, makes up a beautiful vest. You’ll need 1 skein for each 13-round square [and one for finishing rounds], with a little leftover – or a total of 9 skeins to complete a large-size vest. Smaller size, for medium or petite, use a hook a size smaller. In the boutiques, these vests sell for $75 and up!
INGREDIENTS/ITEM NEEDS*:
I-hook (or H-hook for very petite or small size)
3-ply or sport-weight 4-ply [yarn]

INSTRUCTIONS:
Make up 8 Granny Squares, each comprised of 13 rounds. On “wrong” [or “inside”] side of garment, SC side seams from hem edge to armhole for 15 shells and across shoulders, SC from shoulder edge to neck edge for 8 shells [on] each side [or shoulder].
For [the] hem, work from the center front, V-stitch (2 DC sts in same space) between each 3-stitch shell of last row of garment. Then work 4 rows of ½ DC around each space, across hem edge, with 4-sts in corner of lower center front, then up one side of front, around neck, down other side of front, and across hem edge – 4 rows of this.
Armhole finishing is not necessary. “Sew” [or hand-stitch] to conceal any loose ends of yarn throughout the garment. STEAM PRESS… GARMENT, as directed in the “How to Granny..” folder, or garment will not fit properly. You gain about an inch, all over, when you steam press and it feels smoother and better fitting – professional looking!
