KAYMART’s HERO SANDWICH
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in… The Secret Restaurant Recipes Book (National Homemakers Newsletter, Pearl Beach, MI; Jan. 1977, p. 7).
[Kmart once had deep roots in Michigan, going back to 1899, when Sebastian S. Kresge opened a five-and-dime store in downtown Detroit, called S.S. Kresge Company, which eventually evolved into Kmart Corporation. Michigan’s first Kmart store opened in Garden City in 1962. The company’s headquarters were located in Troy, Michigan from 1972 until 2006.
At their peak (in 1994), Kmart stores in Michigan numbered 134. However, its first store in Garden City closed in 2017, marking its decline in the state. Its last store in Marshall, Michigan closed in November 2021. The last Kmart store in the U.S. (in Bridgehampton, NY), closed in October 2024.]
