(HOMEMADE) CLAY

Happy National Craft Month, National Flour Month, and particularly National Children’s Craft Day. Plus, a happy early World Flour Day to you. In honor of all of these, here’s Mom’s secret recipe for…

(HOMEMADE) CLAY

By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her first self-published cookbook, The Better Cooker’s Cookbook (Happy Newspaper Features, Algonac, MI; 1973, p. 45).

Pounding, molding, and mashing clay is another way that children learn. Make clay from this recipe [below]:

INGREDIENTS/ITEM NEEDS:

3 cups salt

6 cups flour

3 TB powdered alum (available at drugstores)

6 cups boiling water

1 TB salad oil

INSTRUCTIONS:

[Combine dry ingredients.] Add boiling water to dry ingredients and stir until mixed. Add salad oil and knead. For color, add food coloring. Store in covered container.
