LIFE SLIVERS
(The Candy Without The Hole)
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in… Eating Out at Home (National Home News, St. Clair, MI; September 1978, p. 19).
INGREDIENTS:
3¾ cups sugar
1 ½ cup light corn syrup
1 cup water
1 tsp flavoring oil of your choice
5 to 6 drops food color
INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix together sugar, corn syrup, and water in a heavy 3-qt pan. Cook on medium heat. Stir constantly. Bring to boil. Boil without stirring to 310°F on candy thermometer [hard-crack (stage, see chart below*)]. Remove from heat.
Add flavoring oil or extract (which is weaker) and desired food coloring. Pour onto foil-lined [sheet] pan. When candy hardens, break into “slivers”. Makes 2 pounds.
