AUNT JENNY’S BROWNIES
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in… The Original 200 Plus Secret Recipes© Book (Secret RecipesTM, Marysville, MI; June 1997, p. 4).
(1947 – from the popular radio program that evolved even before daytime soap operas, with ‘Aunt Jenny’s Real Life Stories’, sponsored by Spry’s pure vegetable shortening.)
INGREDIENTS:
1 ½ cups flour
2 cups sugar
10 level TB unsweetened cocoa (dry)
1 tsp salt
½ cup Spry (or Crisco or butter)
4 eggs, well beaten
½ tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix together, in order listed, all ingredients for 300 strokes by hand or electric mixer for 3-5 minutes, at medium speed, until blended. It should be the consistency of rich icing. Spread evenly in greased and floured, 13×9-inch, oblong, baking pan. Bake at 350°F for 35-40 minutes or until tester inserted into center comes out clean of any wet batter. (These will rise wherever batter has been put, as it doesn’t spread much – so try to spread batter right to sides of pan.) When “done”, brownies have a shiny top. Cut into 2-inch squares and dust in powdered sugar while still warm. Makes 24 pieces.
