INSTRUCTIONS:

THE PATTERN STITCH is called “V-stitch” – basically a double crochet (DC) stitch (st), twice in the same chain (ch). The “V” st is when you begin a row with 1 DC, SC 1 chain then 2 DC in the next chain, SC 1 ch, 2 DC in next chain and so on across to the end of the row. The last “V” st is made in about the 4th chain st from the end of the row.

The last st of each row must be 1 DC. Then you chain 3 on top of that, before turning to do next row. That 3 ch st is the 1st st of the next row. The 2nd st is a “V” – 2 DC in center of the “V” of the previous row. Continue across row, ending with the 1 DC st and ch 3 and turn for next row.

Make 2 pieces [or panels] exactly alike – as given above. Select hook to correspond with desired size. Chain 75; insert hook into 4th ch from hook. 2 DC in that ch, SC 1 ch; 2 DC in next ch and so on, across the row, as pattern stitch is described above, for 36 rows. Bind off. Make 2 pieces like this.

Sew seems for shoulders 10 [chains] from each edge, leaving center open for the neck opening, as illustrated. 17 rows up from bottom edge on each side, tack the two side together with a whip stitch.

FOR THE POCKETS – Chain 23. Insert hook in 4th ch from hook, 2 DC in this ch, SC 1 ch, 2 DC in next ch, etc. across the row as pattern is described above for 16 rows. Bind off. Sew [around 3 sides] as illustrated.

Each row may be a different color yarn OR pockets may be in contrasting colors – or leave them off entirely. The hem edges may be fringed, if you like, or left plain.

For children, use a sport-weight yarn and the small woman’s size [hook]. It’s a good garment to wear under a coat to keep the wind off the chest.

FOR THE SCARF – pattern is worked [same] as for the tunic vest but on 34 sts and 75 rows long. The smaller the hook [and yarn’s weight/ply], the tighter the stitch [will be].
