AMISH QUILT CROCHETED AFGHAN
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published newsletter… Secret Recipes Newsletter (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; May-June 1989, p. 11)
[This pattern really goes fast! I completed a single bed size cover in 4 weeks of spare time – television watching time, mostly. Try it!]
INGREDIENTS/NEEDS:
“I” hook suggested
4-round Granny Squares
4-ply Red Heart or K-mart no dye lot yarn, recommended
INSTRUCTIONS:
TWO TRADITIONAL AMISH QUILT DESIGNS crocheted in a simple 4-round Granny Square. Use our Granny Square instructions from our Granny Square How To Folder… [See April’s posting also on the “Crafts” tab.] …because it is a bit different than the traditional Granny [Square] – easier and faster, as it has no chain stitches between the 3-stitch shells, nor at corners.
FOR THE AFGHANS – The Squares are put together with single crochet stitch on wrong side – either in rows or using the 4-square center (strip) and rounds of squares. Every other row (or round) is cream color (off-white) with “country” colors for alternating rows or rounds, including Oxford Blue, Haze Green, Mauve or medium pink or rose.
Or pick your own colors but every other row is the same color – if not white, beige, whatever! Works best with 3-ply yarn and “I” hook… BUT… one 3 ½-oz skein of Red Heart 4-ply yarn yields 10 squares (sometimes 11) of 4-rounds each and enough yarn leftover from each skein to SC [Single Chain] squares together into strips as pattern shows.
