Happy May to one and all. May is the gateway to summer since Memorial weekend is seen as its unofficial start. When I think of summer in Michigan, I think of beaches and sand…
SAND CANDLES
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published cookbook… Eating Out at Home (National Home News, St. Clair, MI; September 1978, p. 39).
A sandy outer surface gives a candle a wonderful rustic look. Sand candles are easy to make…
INGREDIENTS/ITEM NEEDS:
Shallow container
Sand
Small amount of [coconut] water
Molten wax
Wick
Optional added décor: pebbles, shells, or colored stones*
INSTRUCTIONS:
Place sand in a shallow container. Moisten slightly. With your hand or a small spoon, make a hollow in the sand. Pour in molten wax [and insert a wick] and allow to set. Wipe off excess sand… and there you are!
*The sides of a sand candle can also be decorated by applying pebbles, shells, or colored stones to the walls of the moist sand, before you pour in the wax.
LAST THOUGHTS…
I did this craft with my kids, in their sandbox, when they were in elementary school. They dug the whole in the sand and wet it down then placed their stones where they wanted. I poured in the wax and set the wick. This is a great quick idea for kids to give their moms something handmade for Mother’s Day.
[Note: using coconut water on the sand gives it that beach-like scent. Additionally, keep in mind, the bigger the candle, the longer it will take for the wax to cool and set.]
