How To Steam Press Granny Square Garments
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published folder… Granny Square How To (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; Fall 1986, p. 1).
HOW TO START
When you have decided what project you will begin with…, check out my scales for hook size with various yarn weights (or ply). Don’t overlook any of the information in each of the patterns, especially with vests or sweaters, for steam pressing the finished garment.
If you don’t steam press these, the finished garment is going to look homemade and unprofessional. The steam pressing gives the garment a lovely sheen, even with ordinary flat colors of yarn. You do not steam press the purse – only the clothing garments.

TO STEAM PRESS GRANNY VEST:
Place finished garment on a thick bath towel on a hard surface (NOT an ironing board), like a table or countertop. Dampen a large white handkerchief. Place it flat over a section of garment and have iron (no steam) set at “wool”.
Gently place iron over damp hankie, without sliding iron over it – just until a little hissing sound occurs, briefly, to dry the dampness in the hankie. [Hold it for] too long and you might just melt the yarn. So do it briefly, just to press – on both sides of garment. Hang it on a hanger until completely dry.
