AMISH WINDMILL QUILT PATTERN (Hand Sewn)
By Gloria Pitzer, as seen in her self-published newsletter… Gloria Pitzer’s Secret Recipes Newsletter (Secret RecipesTM, St. Clair, MI; Sep.-Oct. 1990, p. 5).
INSTRUCTIONS:
Make your pattern for the 2 squares from heavy, box-weight cardboard. Use a T-square to be sure corners are exactly square.
The large square (5”x5”) will be cut from cotton percale. Half of the squares must be in a solid color, [other] half in a print [pattern]. The print can be varied – each as different from the others, as you wish.
The inner square (3¾”x3¾”) will be cut from cotton flannel fabric, in white. Center the flannel squares over the “wrong” side [or backside] of the percale squares. Fold edges over, to measure 3¾” on all 4 sides.
Secure corners, tucked in neatly, with a piece of narrow, clear, Scotch tape. Fold [square] into a triangle. Pin in 3 places, along the seams on 2 sides. [As illustrated, above.]
With doubled quilting-strength thread, sew seams together, using an over-cast “whip” stitch around the seam edges. Then whip-stitch folded edges together, to join always one print triangle to one white or solid colored triangle. The triangles can be assembled, as illustrated [above], in blocks, always keeping print triangles next to white or solid colored triangles.
For borders, to enlarge size of quilt, sew triangles of all same color or print together to form squares and then sew squares together with whip-stitch. Keep stitches uniform in size and at about ¼” intervals, about ¼” deep, too.
